Eastern Michigan University hosted its fifth Cruise Night on Sept. 4 at Rynearson Stadium, staged ahead of the football game against San Jose State. The show assembled a mix of antique cars, newer muscle models and several custom-built hot rods for fans and tailgaters to view before kickoff.
Notable entries included a 1971 Mercury Comet GT that underwent a four-year restoration and a 1984 Ford Mustang GT convertible with a previous owner who worked as a schoolteacher. A handmade custom rod called Bad Rattitude won the event’s best-car trophy. Car owners who participated received two tickets to the EMU football game.
For Michigan automotive enthusiasts, the event underscores a growing trend of campus-centered car gatherings that connect local restorers and builders with wider communities of fans. The mix of original restorations and home-built rods highlights ongoing local interest in preserving vintage vehicles while promoting independent custom work. Organizers and participants have signaled a desire to continue the Cruise Night format alongside future campus events.
